I just went outside to gather eggs, and one of the eggs had a very soft shell. I am wondering why they would have layed one like that. If anyone could tell me something I could do to help prevent this I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks, H

There are many causes of soft shells. Are they old or young layers? First thing is to make sure you're giving a source of extra calcium. Usually this is crushed oyster shells freely available. Soft shells are a common problem that often appears on BYC. Check out this current thread, for examples of what you're going through.

You can also search BYC, using terms like "soft shell egg" and "shell less egg". They are also referred to as "membrane", "rubber", "aspic", or "jelly" eggs.
