Hello, I am new out here so be patient. I live in Michigan and just recently purchased some chickens. They are about 4 l/2 months old and they are laying pretty well. However, today freaked me out because one of the chickens laid an egg that was soft. The other chickens ate the egg. Is that normal? I have one more question. I usually buy my feed from a local TSC store which is a farmer supply. The feed looks to be a better quality then the most recent feed that I bought. The recent feed looks like dirt and corn. I thought I would save money by getting from a grain elevator, but the quality doesn't look as good. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Vicki

from NC! Yes, soft eggs are common in new layers. But on the feed question, what saves you money now, will cost you later in the health of your birds. I would consider buying feed from TSC again, that is where I buy my chick starter, and they gobble it up! It is of a high quality, and it is specialized for your needs. Hope I could help!

Yes it's normal for them to eat the soft eggs!! And normal for the new layers to lay the soft eggs!!

As far as the feed goes. I've never purchased any from a grain elevator so maybe someone that does can step up and give you some advice. I used to use the Layena & the Dumor brand from TSC and both worked well!!

Good Luck!

Thank you for the advice on the food to feed my feathered friends.

I appreciate the advice on the soft eggs too. I am new at this chicken business.
