Soft eggs, no shell, or just yolk

Hi,

I have a 2 year old bantam that has been laying soft shell eggs or yolk and shell separate off and on for a month. She seems healthy in all other aspects. She has finished molting and her feathers look amazing. She is eating, drinking and acting fairly normal for a chicken. The rest of my girls are laying regularly. All of mine are different breeds of bantams.

If the rest of your birds are laying fine, I don't think it is feed. I don't really think there is much you can do for this. Laying is more of an internal issue than a diet issue, unless your diet is severely inappropriate.

Might be a bird that either needs to be culled, or it might clear up on her own.

You may want to give her a 1/2 tablet of human calcium with vitamin D today and for up to 7 days, and then see if she lays any with hard shells. If she continues with soft shells, there may be something wrong with her shel gland in the oviduct.
