I have 5 month old Barred Plymouth Rocks and New Hampshires. They just started laying two weeks ago and I still only get 3 - 4 eggs a day. That is not a big problem, I figure they won't all lay at the same time. My issue is that I have been getting a soft egg every day or so. The shell hasn't hardened. What does this mean?

Can I buy something for them at the store or should I give them more household items with calcium in it?

You should be able to find crushed oyster shell at the feed store. Just let them self serve. They will take as much as they need. Yogurt might help too as well as feeding back their own egg shells.

Yep, oyster shells from the store, or crushed egg shells from your house.
