I have 3 girls that are just starting to lay. My partridge rock and Buff orpington have nice hard shells. My silver spangled hamburg has layed 2 eggs both on the same day and the egg shells were very soft and gooey feeling. the egg is side looked normal but the shells were by no means normal. I disposed of those eggs. Is this normal?

You've discovered just one of the many forms of "oops eggs."

I call that one the jello egg (membrane, but no shell. You'll get tissue paper eggs, yolk/white only (no shell, no membrane), fart eggs (tiny, no yolk), and some just plain alian looking eggs.
Yes, oops eggs are most common among new layers. Many people keep oyster shell in a dish available for their birds free choice to help boost calcium. If you're feeding layer feed, and there's still an issue two weeks from now, then I'd get some oyster shell... Most likely just a glitch as her egg equipment ramps up...
