I know that a lot of people have posted threads on soft egg shells, but here's my little situation. I have 2 of my 6 girls laying. The 4 that aren't laying range in age from 14 weeks to about 18 or 19 weeks. So, I found a soft shelled egg today inside the coop under the roost. I found it weird because my 2 older hens always lay in the nest box, but figured it was Penny the BLRW since the egg was light brown.

So Samantha (Ameraucana) went in & layed an egg in the nest box & we figured those were our 2 eggs for the day. Well now Penny is in the nest box laying...hmmmm. Now, that can only mean that one of the pullets must have layed the soft one right? Is it possible that Penny dropped the soft egg while on the roost over night & now layed another one? I'll advise on the status of the egg she laid now. Any info is greatly appreciated :)

Young layers will lay softer eggs sometimes, but maybe she hasn't eaten enough calcium. It happens sometimes, I don't think soft eggs are much of a problem as long as they aren't ALWAYS laying soft eggs.

Their food has plenty of calcium & the sand inside of the coop & run has shells in it. Plus all of their eggs have been very hard. I checked the nest box & there was no egg. She was in there before for a while as if she was going to lay, but nothing. I guess time will tell.
