I Hope you can help. One of my chooks is laying eggs that are not fully formed . 3/4 of the shell is fine, although a little thin, but the point is very soft and rubbery. Most times it is broken as when Blondie lays it she immediately turns around and pecks at it. This has been happening now for about 10 months. The chooks are about 2 years old now. Over this time i have tried - shell grit, calcium powder, different feeds 16%, 20% protein grain, pellets, dry dog food and nothing so far has worked. I am inclined to think the problem is not dietary because only 1 chook out of 5 is laying the soft shell eggs. Does anyone have any ideas or past experience? I would appreciate any suggestions.
Cheers
Toni

Thank you for the welcome. I am at my wits end trying to solve this problem. Just now i came in from outside to find a broken egg on the lounge room floor. Cheeky thing came inside and dropped her egg in here! What am I to do haha

Hello I noticed your post since my hen is doing the same thing. She is also 2 yrs old and laying the same soft tipped egg for about two month now. She is a Barred Rock and is not doubt the lazyest on the nest. The rest are eating them because when she drops it probably breaks a bit and then it's lunch.

My other Barred Rock stopped laying about 6 months ago she was laying soft shelled eggs and then no shelled eggs and then nothing. I am wondering if it's the breed. I don't know why but would also like to find out! Thanks and good luck!

It is frustrating isnt it? Mine are btown lowmans I have 4 and 1 white chook with small irregular black spots and black yellow dirty looking legs. I have no idea what she is but she is a good consistant layer. her name is Juicy Lucy because she is fatter than the others.
My girl with the soft eggs stopped laying for about 1 1/2 months ago. Then I started getting an egg with the soft shells again I assume it is Blondie and hope it isn"t one of the others starting to go the same way.

I looked at Barred Rocks on Internet and think they are beautiful. I have decided to get one next time I am buying. I have changed feeds yet again I am giving pellets again but different brand and adding water because they won't eat them dry as they are used to seed . Have you had any luck with yours yet? I haven't seen a soft shell for the past 3days but I don't think she is laying I am ably getting 2 to 3 eggs a day from 5 just have to wait and see!
Cheers Toni
