My girls are exactly (to the day, almost) one year old. My New Hampshire Red has laid three soft shelled eggs lately, the first of which was from the roost. She laid one tiny shelled egg in between the softies. Not sure if it's because I gave her egg shell and calcium +D3 the night before. The trouble is, she acts like she doesn't feel well when it's time to lay a soft egg. I even brought her in to the avian vet, but she looked great and had that tiny firm egg inside at time, so he was not concerned. She acts completely normal except when it's time to lay a soft egg. At those times, she lowers and bobs her tail, sometimes closing her eyes a little, like she's egg bound. The softies are harder to lay (nothing to push on), and one came out broken (she passed white, then yolk, then soft shell). The silly girl refuses oyster shell, but loves egg shell. They are on the organic layer crumble from Costco. None of her sisters are having issues (not including my molter, who isn't laying.) I would like to try a calcium with D3 supplement. Gave her some human calcium with D3 by crushing it and sprinkling a little on her favorite treat of scramble egg, but don't want to fry her kidneys. I'll be looking for something meant for chickens.
