I had my first experience with a soft shell egg this morning. It was a bit strange as I found it on the poop board and not in the nest. Not sure on which hen delivered it either.
My hens are about 1 year old now and have been on the same layer feed from the beginning.
It is a good mix that includes calcium (see label).
Could it be a random egg that came out too fast?

If you mix in crushed oyster shells with their regular feed it makes the shells thicker! You should be able to buy it at your local feed store or anywhere that sells chicken feed! I had great results after i started doing that

So you think adding oyster shells would help. I know of the oysters shell trick but I thought it was mostly if the chickens were not getting regular calcium. Since the feed I get for them has calcium, I did not think I needed any extra.
I will plan on adding oyster shells. Thanks.

Once in a while these weird eggs happen, but oyster shell is always good. I do not mix mine in, but have a separate pan of oyster shell for them to eat it free choice.

edited because apparently I can't spell today, had to fix it, lol
