Soft Shell First Egg

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Definitely common with new layers. It takes time for them to get their egg laying machines in gear. I have some young Barred Rocks that started laying a couple weeks ago and while I am now getting hard shelled eggs, I am still getting soft shells and yolks. Keep up with a good layer feed, oyster shell and just give them time to mature.

Enjoy your new flock and welcome to ours!

Hi All,

This was reassuring to read. I have three Wyndottes and a week ago one of my girls started laying perfect eggs with good hard shells. Today another one of the girls laid her first egg which we found cracked and soft shelled. It was still whole but way softer than those of her pal. It was a good bit bigger than those laid by our other hen, ant thoughts?:/

This thread has made me feel better...got our first egg today but it was soft shelled and broke (she laid it from the roost onto the poopboard). It looked normal inside. Hopefully she'll soon learn to lay in the nesting boxes on soft hay.
