One of my hens layed a soft shelled egg. I ground up some oyster shell and I've been giving them that sprinkled on their feed. So I am pretty sure it's not that.
This cage of hens just started laying last week. The soft shelled egg was pretty big so it's not from the remaining first timer in the cage.
Is it time to switch them to layer mash. I am thinking they are laying too fast. Is that possible? Can too high of protein cause that? My Grower feed I've been feeding is 28%.
What protein Do I need?

Soft shelled or no shell eggs in pullets is normal. It is a good time to switch feed to a layer pellet at this time. No worries on the soft eggs. It is par for the course this time of year with pullets. They will get in sync in about a month. Maybe even less.

Wish ya the best.

Is this a quail? I keep mine on game bird starter 28% their whole life.

Sorry about my earlier post. I did not pay attention to the fact these were quail. I had chickens on the brain.

If these are quail definitely keep them on the 28% Game Bird Starter. Oyster shell ground up like you are doing is best. Usually around 6 to 8 weeks coturnix start laying.
