i have a chicken who is laying soft shelled eggs. they are almost a leather consistency. as soon as she lays them they burst. what could this be caused from?

I also just went out to close up the "kids" and there in the nest was an egg that had no shell it seemed, just the membrane around it. I thought the birds had been eating eggs because I would find only yolk in the nests for about a week and now I am wondering if one of the hens are laying soft shelled eggs consistently. I have free choice oyster shell and layer feed there 24/7. Any one have ideas?

What are you feeding her? Like Imp said, it could be that she's just a new layer getting the kinks out of her system, but she could need more calcium too.

i am feeding laying pellets and chops. what else should she be getting? all my other hens are laying fine.

Pellets are good, not sure what chops are...A few of mine seem to need more calcium then the layer provides so I started putting out oyster shell free choice and the pullets that needed it ate it and the others left it alone. I have chicks on the ground again now so I have everybody on gamebird which doesn't have enough calcium for any of the layers so I'm going thru a lot more oyster shell. It's funny how they'll regulate their own calcium intake when it's available.

Just put out fresh OS - maybe they don't like it older.
