I have a two year old Golden Comet - my best layer. She usually lays every day, nice big eggs. Yesterday and today she laid two very soft shelled eggs and one egg with no shell - in the yard, not the nesting box. We feed her layer feed, have oyster shell available, and she free ranges quite a bit. Not noticing any other peculiar behavior and all the other hens are laying normally. Any idea why she would do this or if we need to do something for her?

Hi and

. You might need to actually mix some of the oyster shell in with her feed--she might not be smart enough (usually they are, but) to take enough on her own. Or, what i have done in the past is mix some shell ( i use used egg shells) in with some yogurt, and they will go crazy for it. After several days, she should be laying normal again
