A diode will not put off enough heat. But the bulb I linked to is a very small regular bulb. It would get very hot. No sealed bulb should ever fail because its in water. Now if you take it out an let it get real hot then put it back in the water it may crack.

To run a small 40 watt house bulb all night you would need at least 2 deep cycle battery's that I think are around $150 each an a solar cell that averages 80 watts at $343.

Double all that if you want it on 24/7.

Yowser! Wasnt planning on spending that much. I see them on eBay going for cheaper than that... 12volt batteries, that is. Would it really take an 80 watt solar panel? I wasnt counting on that large of a solar panel. I tell ya what, I've played with the idea for some time, and then end up talking myself out of it for some reason. I think I'm going to get the parts cheap on eBay, if I can. And then experiment. You really think that light you linked to would be enough to keep the water unfrozen? Have you tried something similar. I've got the one of those big 3 gallon galvanized waterers. During most of the year, it only has to be filled up about once a week. But during the winter, the water freezes on really cold days making it necessary to replace with warm water once a day. It is a pain in the butt. I need some kind of solution.

I think in most environments north of me it will at least keep a a spot around the light thawed. Here at the Tn/Ga/Al line it would be plenty. I know for a fact that a tail light bulb will run a small incubator an need a thermostat too. You could use one of those of ya want an step up to say a 5 watt solar cell.
