I read you should have a night light in your coop for the girls. Mine was too far from the house to run electricity so I went solar. I got a $4.00 solar walk way light from wal-mart. I screwed the top off (it had the solar cell on it) used the based of it for the pattern to cut into the top of the coop reattached the base and put it in the hole in the coop. The girls now have light. DH could not believe I could be so clever.

Here's a pic of mine with the solar panel at the top left corner. I got it from Lowe's a couple of weeks ago. It was on clearance for about $27. It comes with three spotlights, all with mounts so I was able to screw them directly into the places I needed them. I put two in the house and the other is in the run pointing down towards the house door. They work great.

OK, but windows are a lot simpler and more generally-useful way of achieving the same thing (i.e. avoiding having the coop be an inky black realm of darkness). I would really recommend windows (on the north side or under a roof overhang if you're worried about overheating) or just plain ol' predator-screened ventilation openings, much more so than some lightbulb.

Although indeed it CAN be handy to have a light available for when you want to check on things after dark.

JME, good luck, have fun,

Pat
