We received our Meyer hatchery order in the mail today and 3/4 chicks died during shipment. We will get replacements, but in the meantime my lone survivor (a Buff Orpington) is by herself. Is there anything I can do to help her? We don't have local chicks available so she is just by herself until Meyer will replace the ones that didn't make it in shipping. :(

Sorry for your loss. I am waiting on an order from meyer right now. I know they cover the losses but do they pay for shipping on the replacements or are you responsible? My shipping was like $45 and the chicks were $30. Just wondering cause shipping rates are so high being express.

Dont have chicks yet but think it would be fine. I would just spend a lot of time with it. Feel bad for her too.

I will find out on Thursday whether the shipping is covered or not. On the shipping notification, I noticed they insure the package for $100,hopefully that will cover all replacement costs, including shipping. Our survivor is shaky - will see if she makes it through the night. If she doesn't, I'll call tomorrow.

We put a mirror and a little stuffed walrus in her brooder. She is shaky, though.. not sure if it is normal for a baby chick to have tremors.

I hope she makes it.

Some very young chicks may have a hard time holding up their heads, especially if this one was compromised in the shipping. Just make sure she's eating and drinking. That will go a long way to helping her recover. If she's not drinking, dip her beak in the water to get her started. They'll eat when they get hungry. If not, you could add a little water to her chick feed and make a mash for her. They will usually eat that when they don't eat the dry. Hope she makes it too! My BO's are my best laying hens.

She's not very interested in food or water, but she has had a drink. I sprinkled some crumble in her water and then she pecked at it - so she got some water along with it. I also made her a boiled egg & mashed it. She liked that and pecked a little. She is sleeping a lot. How much do baby chicks sleep normally?

poor thing. Hope she makes it too. If she is shaking she may be cold? No others to cuddle with. Is the temp under the heat lamp at least 95 degrees? I put mine in the corner so if its too hot, she will have room to move away from it and still be able to get under it if needed. Read that if they are cold, they will move closer to the light.

The heat is warm under the lamp, but she kept going into a corner to sleep. I put a stuffed toy in there and a mirror, with the toy under the lamp to keep her there. She is currently snuggling the toy and sleeping with it.
