Solid base run - hardwood chips or hemcore?

I've had my chickens for a couple of weeks now and have used Hemcore in the house and in the run ( which has a concrete base ). I did think that the Hemcore would dry out nicely but after a few days of rain it's turned to mush! What can I use to keep it nice and smell free?

The manufacturer's website shows it used indoors. That might be the key to keeping it dry. It strikes me as being too absorbent for use outdoors in the rain. Of course, you have already learned that.

Sand in the run or just plain soil works for me.

Strangely enough it was recommended for use in the run on another forum! I've learnt quickly it's great in the dry and shocking when exposed to the elements!
