Solid, rubbery, deformed egg

Thanks, all. I guess I'll keep an eye out to see if it becomes consistent and try to figure out who it is.

I'm halfway between "pets" and "farm" as far as chicken value goes. When they quit laying, they go into retirement and just get to eat and hang out. We really enjoy them and have even sacrificed some prime yard so my wife can watch them from the back porch, but I'm not taking a $25 bird to a $50-100 vet plus meds. If this was something that could decimate the whole flock, that would be different.

I read up on this and it appears the condition is "salpingitis". No known causes, not contagious. So if I figure out who it is, I'll band her leg with a stay tie (loose) for easy identification and if there are signs of distress, I'll cull and bury her.

There's known causes of Salpingitis.

ah, my mistake.

My understanding (and this too may be wrong) was that while they knew what types of bacteria could cause it- where they came from and how to prevent them beyond keeping the coop clean, keeping the waterers clean and disinfecting periodically, etc. was what was unknown. That's what I meant by "cause". Sorry for the confusion. I did not research it a lot, so again, that could be off as well.

btw, no change today. No new lash egg, still only seven eggs instead of the regular eight. Nothing overly odd on the poop boards. Everyone as enthusiastic as always.

Well, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and today we were back up to eight eggs. Yesterday was nine with one oversized. Probably an intermittent from one of the "old girls". One from the first group used to lay double sized eggs from time to time.

Somebody still has diarrhea. It's not everywhere, there's just one blob of it on the poop board most mornings and I occasionally see a spot on the ground. That said, when I walk out the back door in the afternoon it still looks like there should be theme music the way they all come running, some running and flapping trying to fly like an albatross on takeoff- just faster. There's no way you can say "that one there seems to be slower than the rest". Nobody looks thin. I cut up a watermelon last night and went out with the rinds and told the wife "Wanna see the Chicken races?" and ran around the outside of the fence holding the plate of rinds out. It was funny for about 50 feet or so.

Maybe we're dodging a bullet here.

I hope you continue to dodge that bullet. It was several months after I first noticed lash material before my Australorp died. I'm glad everything is still relatively normal!
