We've got five beautiful, eight-week-old hens that we've been letting free range periodically during the day and late afternoon. Within the last week, we've had two near misses involving a hawk and the hens. Would it be a good idea to get a rooster to protect the flock? If so, would it be easiest to get it as a chick or get an adult one to integrate with the girls?

If you are near NE Alabama, I will gladly give you a rooster or two, or three ... I like having a rooster with the hens. They seem much more at ease when they are out of the run if they have their protector with them (although there's never been any preditors that I've seen).

Sorry, I forgot... I have 2 RIR roosters that are 9 weeks old and would probably be much easier to put with yours. A full grown rooster might be agressive with those young chicks. However, you can't really expect a young rooster to defend against a hawk.
