So I have 4 chicks 2.5 weeks old. 1 of them started sneezing, scratching beak, and shaking her head. Her name is Precious. I applied some Vetrx to her beak and under her wings. I then noticed two others scratching their beaks and shaking their heads. Is this a respiratory infection??
  1. 1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
Exchequer leghorn, 2.5 weeks old, not sure of weight, but they feel normal.
  1. 2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Liquid coming out of nostrils, some sneezing, shaking head, scratching beak
  1. 3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
A few hours
  1. 4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
1 chick has the above syptoms, 1 chick seems fine. The other 2 have been shaking their heads and scratching their beaks, but not sneezing.
  1. 5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
Nope
  1. 6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
We have had rainy weather the last two days, but they have been inside, in their brooder. It was nice out on Wednesday and they had their first outing, but only for about 10 min.
  1. 7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
Medicated chick starter. date on bag is 1 month ago. They had nutri drench in water yesterday and clean (filtered) water since.
They have been eating and drinking fine.

  1. 8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
The 1 with above symptoms has had two runny poops today and some yesterday, but then it goes back to normal poops. Everyone else has normal poops.
  1. 9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
Vetrx on Q-tip applied to beak and under wings.
  1. 10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
No vets close. I have Bird Sulfa, but don't want to give it unless its the last resort. I plan on giving them all some Vetrx before bed tonight.
  1. 12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
3x4 brooder. Puppy pad with papertowels on top. (Pine shavings were bothering one of them last week so I stopped using it). No heat lamp, woolly hen & hot water bottle with cover & wrapped in paper towels. The woolly hen temp is 85°F and brooder temp is 75°F

I have done alot of research to prepare for these guys, but now I'm confused and a little freaked out:hit

Are their nostrils clear of down, bedding and feed?

Chicks do sometimes sneeze. Losing their down and growing in new feathers can be itchy, they get "fuzz" in the nostrils and in their beaks. As long as they are active, eating/drinking and have no other signs of respiratory illness (difficulty breathing, coughing, wheezing, lethargy) then I would just wait and watch. If the sneezing increases and prohibits them from eating/drinking, then I would consider treating them.

If you have photos or video you would like to share, we will be happy to take a look. Photos of the poop you are concerned about too.
Chickens have 2 types of poop, 1 is "normal" which is a formed poop with a white cap. The other is cecal poop, this can be loose, pudding like or runny it's stinky and a lot of times sticky. The looseness of poop is also dependent on how much a chicken has been drinking.

Thanks WR. I think it is just be a sinus thing. Precious still has some fluid she shakes from her nostrils, but no more sneezing. Her poop is a little concerning as its more than the normal cecal poop I see in a day, but I will keep an eye on it. Siggy our fastest growing chick got picked on last night. I found her laying on her side with some bloody peck wounds to the neck. I cleaned it out with Vetericyn and then sprayed wound-kote so now she has a purple neck, lol. They seem to be ok other than wanting out of their brooder, which I will let them out in a little bit.
Thanks again!

chicks that age can cecal several more times a day then say a 3 month old chick.

i was worried about my girls. but it seems very normal. my area of expertise is physical injurys not illness.

head shaking is also fairly normal as if they have tourettes.

be concearned if the nostrils leak profusely, the discharge is colored, either a light feint yellow to a green color.

the discharge is thick to the touch, like our snot after we cry or when we have a cold.

a little snot is normal, as is them flinging snot after sneezing by shaking theyre head (equivelant to us blowing our nose or whiping) and they will whipe theyre nose/beak on you or the ground after eating/sneezing.

physically pick your girls up 2 handed and place your ear to theyre back. you will hear wheezing. some feint clicking is normal.

pay attention for mouth breathing as well as this can be a sign and tell.

if you hear wheezing, see colored or thick discharge. you can get duramicin-10 at most feed stores. i cant remember the dosage off the top of my head but has an active life of 24 hours so you have to mix it daily.

hope this helps

Sorry guys, thank you for the advice. At the moment my 8 yr old seems to have a nasty stomach bug (a lot of throw up, ugh)
Its clear liquid coming out her nose. And the poops have solidified.
I will keep an eye on them and post any update (changes)

Everyone is doing so much better (including my son, thank God) here is a pick of them on top of their woolly hen.

Poops are normal and Respitory issues clearing up. I think the Vetrx really helped.
Sorry I freaked out.
Thank you for all the help.

Exchequer leghorns. A Scottish blend of white leghorns. Great egg layers. Hardy birds. Mine are very sweet. Except for my Roo. He is a bit of a bully, even to me.
