To keep the composting deep litter off the wood of the structure.

In my hot, humid climate with massive numbers of wood-destroying insects we lost the understructure of the Little Monitor Coop in just over 5 years despite it being pressure-treated and ground-contact rated.

It's quite unnecessary in most climates.
