Some general duck questions

In my own opinion and experience, Ducks are so easy, their quiet for the most part, never try to get over any fencing, and their very very pleasant. My chickens are foraging all day. Scratching everything. My Ducks run out and forage for an hour then sleep for an hour. Play in the water for an hour sleep for an hour. Forage again. Sleep. They are very docile and easy. If you freerange I think that keeps them quiet because, the more happy anything in life is, the less commotion there is. My Ducks will be more quacky if we don't let them out before 10 am. They want water. Because all my birds go without water from 9pm til about 9am. My coop is dry as a bone and clean. DO NOT HAVE WATER ANYWHERE NEAR THEIR LIVING QUARTERS. LOL

Ok that helps a lot. And yes I need a bird no louder than a chicken. Where I am at there is a noise ordinance and I don't particularly want everyone knowing I have poultry.

I can cage the ducks the entire time, so the Muscovies wouldn't be a problem in that sense, I just like the idea of letting them have some free range time. If I knew how to do the pinion that would be different, but I wouldn't want to try and attempt it.

Basically the only reason for Muscovies Are the noise. I really need to weigh out my options

And yes no drakes.

So I should keep any deep water away from their bedding? Or do you even take away drinking water

There are ways to present the water to them so they can't splash it out, if you have to keep them contained in a cage. Go on google and look up no spill duck water ideas. Pinioning is extremely easy. The 1st time I did it I was nervous, but there's pretty much no blood, and when you do it to day old ducklings, Or even 2 day old ones, you can use finger nail clippers, and the ducklings Dont even seem to notice. If you were up for doing it I can find the link to the website that followed and it was very good, basically if their caged and not free ranging, I don't really know how much quacking you will have from Ducks like buffs, hybrids, or layers. Muscovies won't make noise. But they don't lay like those named. If you were good with 180 maybe 200 eggs a year per hen, then I would get them and pinion them. But truly Ducks, in my experience don't make much noise at all. This is just me. Maybe we need others opinions, people that keep them that live in a setting more like yours!!!

My Shetland ducks bantam silkies and turkeys live all together They are happy and healthy I find the silkies to be great brooding any egg and very gentle breed The ducks like it out side the coop mostly and also my male tom the turkey hen and silkies go inside. Water isn't a problem since they eat and are full then on and on. I don't like old food or wet food cuz of rodents mildew and I'm organic so it would be kinda rough on it under the sun. Hope this helped

Yeah, that's basically where I am split on Muscovies or not. I just want a breed that I can let out of the cage, put back in after a couple of hours, and it not be quacking all day lol.

So I decided to get some Muscovies. I will have them pinioned at the hatchery. I also think I will get a drake.

4 females and 1 drake should do nicely. Approximately how much square footage do they need for housing?

I think I'll get a drake so in a year or two I can breed them for meat as well!

I have no rooster, so my drake should get along with my chickens? Actually they should all get along in general or will they pretty much just actively avoid each other.

All my birds, (turkeys, Ducks, chickens, geese and Guineas) all get along with each other. Sometimes every once in a while a male will get a little fresh with another male of another species, but for the most part they just co exist just fine. They probably won't be running around frolicking in the daisies together but they won't be fighting or hurting each other. Besides, chicken hens won't want to establish any dominance, so a male Muscovy won't want to display any, and regardless, your hens will just run away if a male gets a little frisky. But he shouldn't. If you provide a decent little setup WHEN you do free range, they won't want to go anywhere anyways. But pinioned muscovies will know from the beginning to not even attempt to fly. They will just flop over. So they dont even try ive never had any of my birds even just up on my 4 foot fence. Just keep them happy, and happy when free ranging is diverse and plenty of foraging food or whatever. Twice a day I throw few bowls worth of scratch grains down but in a wide throw. It keeps them busy a while.

As far as how much room they need, I can't really answer that because I have a lot of birds crammed into a barn, they fit just fine, but they literally go in to sleep and lay eggs. And I keep their bedding super dry and clean. They have access to their yard all day. They literally sleep in there. And it works. But keeping them penned up for extended periods of time I would imagine you would want to give them a bit of space.

How often do you plan on letting them out to forage?

That's a hard question to answer. I always let them out when I mow. So 3-4 hours at one time once a week.

Some weeks my chickens get out 4-5 times a week for 2-3 hours, some weeks only once a week.

The run I would have for the 4-5 ducks would be fairly large. Probably at least 4x8 with a house in there (the house is only 3x2)
