My chicks are a week old now and I brought them outside for the first time today. They really didn't get that they where supposed to eat the bugs. So I decide to give them a treat but don't know what to give them please help.

Hobo, I'm pretty new here and don't have my chicks yet, but I've been reading everything posted on here for weeks. Most folks say the chicks should not go outside until they are feathered out (several weeks old) so it sounds like yours are just a bit too young for bug picking! Most folks also say that chick starter is still the best thing there is for the first 3-4 weeks, but some hand-feed their chicks mealworms. Guess you have to hold them under their nose so they know it's FOOD! Careful your chicks don't catch a chill . . . their temp should still be a steady 85-90 degrees with NO DRAFTS. Good luck!

Mine loved earthworms cut into pieces and mealworms. By now they dont bother with waiting if I find an earthworm and they know when I pick up the shovel its DINNERTIME. If it is warm where you are then I dont see any problem with taking them out for a walk, I would make sure they dont get wet or chilled

It was around 80* up here today and they were only outside for a few minutes. I can't feed them worms because they are to deep down in the soil right now so is there anything else they can have.

I've done mealworms, cooked yam, steel cut oatmeal (cooked), and little bits of grass/spinach/weeds, at that age. Even if they just play in it, I figure it is a good experience.
