I just picked up one of the chicks that hatched yesterday under a broody. It's a black chick so I could see these easily--up around it's head I saw two specks of whitish-yellow (one on each side). I pulled one off and it was definitely a bug--it was down in like a tick--headfirst--I couldn't tell if it was into the skin or not. The other one disappeared before I could get it. It didn't sound like the description I just read of a louse. It kind of had a small head and big rounded body rather than flat and the back sort of looked like a shell.
I checked the other chicks but didn't see any more. Any idea what this is?
