We just had a polish chick hatch yesterday and one hatch earlier today the newer chick is walking around fine but the first chick just kinda scoots around the incubator. His legs were kinda stiff this morning but are not loosened up to where they can fully extend he just like drags himself around the incubator. We have accepted that if he doesn’t start walking soon we may just cull him. Has anyone delt with this or have ideas on how I could help him?

Give him some time. Some chicks take longer than others to find their footing. There also might not be anything wrong with him, some chicks scoot more at first than others. He's staying upright and not constantly flopped onto his side or back, so he's not doing as badly at the whole walking thing as he could be. Can he lay his feet flat on the ground or are they curled? If they're curled and unable to lay flat, then he may need you to fashion him some tape/cardboard shoes to straighten the feet out so he can walk properly. He may only need to wear them the first couple days, if at all. Do the feet hang behind him or anything when he's dragging himself around?

I opened the image: Is that food in the incubator? That is not necessary, in fact you dont want them to have food at this time- they are still eating their yolk sac (high level nutrients), and are you sure that is the first chick? it is still wet.... what is the incubator humidity? I think that might be the second egg to hatch. Honestly.

No this is in the brooder box next to it. I know it’s the first to hatch because it’s a completely different color our second one to hatch is black this one is lighter. The humidity had been the same in the incubator for the second one that hatched and is already dry this one hatched a whole day before. We have hatched multiple eggs before but this is our first polish chick who can’t walk

I have hatched a bunch before but have never had one scooting around for 2 days and was a little worried but we are gonna give him time! Someone in my polish group said vitamins in the water could help so we are giving it some vitamin water and have moved him over to the brooder so he has food and water

My two cents as a vet: Do not move it into the brooder until he is fully feathered. Give a drop of apple juice (vitamin water is actually overkill and not digestible at that age- they need glucose IMO). If you want- add the vitamins to apple juice. A drop every couple hours.

But what is the humidity in the brooder? Im asking for a specific reason.

we moved him over because the other eggs are beginning to to hatch and are pecking at his head (since he’s a crested breed continued pecking at his head seemed like a good enough reason for us to move him over to our box with the heat lamp and he’s starting to dry off a bit). We have the humidity around 75

There’s a possibly it had gotten to 80 at some point but it’s normally around or at 75%
