Northern Michigan still-house
Last night I was doing my weekly chicken checks and while checking the vents of my chickens I saw somekind of parasitic insect on and around there vents, crawling into their feathers. I've tried looking for images to ID these critters but haven't come up with anything. They are very small, black, and look like a pencil dot (if you were to make a dot with a pencil on a piece of paper). I've seen fleas and I'm pretty sure that these are not fleas as they did not hop and all of the pictures of Lice I've come across are a brownish color. I dusted them all off with DE last night and am planning on picking up some Sevin today but I would like to have some idea of what I am dealing with. Could anyone clue me in on what these critters could be?

Will Sevin take care of mites or do I need something stronger? I just wish this would have happened a month ago when it was 80 degrees. Right now in northern Michigan it's been dipping below freezing at night and that makes me very weary of giving any of my birds a bath.

Sevin dust or ivermectin pour on will treat mites. Keep in mind that ivermectin's primary purpose is a wormer. Also remember that you'll have to dust inside the coop, nests and roosts. Then repeat dusting birds, coops, nests and roosts again in 7-10 days.

I've picked up some Y-Tex Gardstar Garden & Poultry Dust w/Permethrin as well as a bottle of Wazine. I have a group of banties from Spring '11 that have never been wormed so I figured, 2birds-1 stone.
