Some MEDICATED chicken feed may be poisonous for horses

I find it very strange that eating it in a chicken feed would harm a dog.
Sounds like your dog had something else going on it with it.
Ditto.....and maybe in the whole community
We live in a farming community and apparently this is common.

I haven't heard anything about it, tho I don't browse the medical forum much,
I'd think we'd have heard many more stories.

I browse and I have never heard such a thing.

Amprolium is given to dogs for Coccidiosis.

She had her regular check up the first week in February with all the regular tests and everything was normal. Granted I have 2 Rack Russell's as well and it does not affect them. Vet says that since they tend to eat other critters rabbits, mice or really anything they can catch the Jack Russells have a stronger constitution. The yorkie is a foofoo dog and does not have the prey drive so is not exposed to the same bacteria. I know I had one sick little girl on my hands!

I have I follow-up visit on the 21st and will ask for details to share here.

Some medicated chicken feed contains monensin which is EXTREMELY toxic to horses. To the point where many owners (myself included) will not buy feed which was milled in the same facility that makes feed containing monensin.

Most cases are fatal, and there's nothing you can do other than supportive care. There are cases of entire barns dying because of contaminated feed.

Anyone who uses Ivermectin should also be very careful that their dog doesn't get into it. Especially herding breeds who haven't been tested for the mutation of the MDR1 gene. A miniscule amount can be fatal in those dogs. And yes I know it's the active ingredient in heart worm meds, but at a far far lower dose then what can be given to poultry or horses.

Which brand name of feed uses Monensin still?

I can't find any feed in the US that have this in them.
I have a feeling that this may be one of those "10-20 years ago it was a problem" type of problems. Maybe other parts of the world still use monensin (or anything other than amprolium), but I have never seen or heard of it in my time keeping quail and chickens. I see references to it being used for cattle, but not poultry.
