I live in Stamford, CT on an acre lot, and I keep a backyard flock of a dozen laying hens. Don't have a rooster, though they are permitted unless someone complains and then they have to go. My neighbors have been curious and accepting for the most part. I think that as BYCer's, it's important that we be ambassadors of the flock. There are some people who are just cynical, or downright mean spirited, but most people who object are simply uneducated. It's hard not to get discouraged and/or angry about this lack of education, but that won't further our cause. For me it's all about sustainability and living as naturally as I possibly can in a really unnatural environment. Spreading the word is part of that.
