I'm throwing around the idea of trying to sell some of my photography for the holiday season, but I have some questions for those of you who may be experienced in these sorts of things.
I'm not new in photography, but I'm not a professional either. I've been dabbling in the hobby for about 4 or 5 years now and I bought a fairly decent camera (though not an SLR) a little over a year ago. I'm still learning, but I've managed to take what I think are some pretty nice photos. My dad keeps telling me I should try and sell some of my work, but I haven't had a chance to yet. Now I'm thinking about selling some of it for a little bit of extra money, but mostly to get my foot in the door. I figure I can sell the pictures for a little bit more than the cost of printing/matte/frame + shipping. I'd only be making a little bit of profit, but at least it would be getting my work out there.
Now my questions are:
What website would you suggest I use for showcasing some of my work?
I figure it would probably be easiest to ship matted pictures, rather than framed pictures, but how would I go about shipping pictures without them getting crushed or bent? Also, how much do you think it would cost to ship something like a photo?
I'm not sure about prices yet, but I was thinking something like $15 or $20 for a matted 8X10. Does this sound like a lot? I think the matts are $5-$7 depending on the quality and the photos are about $3-$4 to print. Obviously, 5X7's and 4X6's would be less.
What would be the best way to spread the word about my photos without spending a ton of money to do so? Once I get more experience, I'm thinking I could do some local craft/art shows but I don't think I'm quite good enough to do that just yet.
I know I have more questions, but I'll ask them as I think of them. Here are a few examples of work I've done already. Some of my work has won awards in local shows and some of my photos were showcased in the fair queen competition I entered over the summer.
