Hi!
we are currently having an addition to our house built, and once it is done, I will have my own room. my parents said I could choose how to decorate it. I wanted to paint the walls a pale gold or beige and have the rest of the room be in shades of gold, rust, and brown. my mother thinks it will be too dark, but I think that as long as the walls are a light color, it won't be too dark, and anyway the room has two large windows. do you guys think she is right?

second, how do you find a blanket or quilt that matches the rest of the room? I would make a quilt myself, but I'm too busy with school work, and I've never made a very large or complicated quilt, so I doubt that I could do it without a lot of practice first.

It might be too dark depending on the shades you put on the walls, and the curtains. I'd be going to a paint store, grabbing some paint chips and taking them into the room to see for myself before any final decisions are made. Also would be nice to see just how much light will reflect or absorb into the colors from the windows placement in the room. You may be able to find a virtual site that you could plan your room by putting in the floor plan, window placement, etc. and see how it might look. If you can access something like that it also might ease moms worries about it being too dark as well.

You could also look for the bed covering first and then choose your wall colors from that.

Consider a pop of color to offset the browns...like turquoise or jade or orange; they will brighten the room.

Cindiloo had a great idea about looking for a virtural site.

Post some pics when you're done!!

Well DUH! I just remembered I have a wall in my dining room that is a dark gold color!! I'll post a photo because it is right next to the back door and it gets the morning light.

You can also see the column that is painted in cream, for contrast.

thanks for all the suggestions! I will definitely look for a site where I can see what it would look like. I have also been considering using a blue or green to offset all the warm colors.
