I don't know a rat's MO but they're certainly capable of getting into 2x3" openings and will attack chicks and even adult chickens (by biting the feet).

OH ME. I am so sorry, that sounds very hard and sad. It sounds like you did everything you could do - before and now after the attack. I too, am worried about what I will find in the morning.

My hardest day/night of poultry keeping to date. I know we live and learn but it is hard learning lessons with little lives. Hopefully I've outsmarted it but we will see. Good luck tonight! I'll let ya know if I catch anything tonight.

@Tamdog just got a raccoon in my larger trap! Right under the brooder. YES!

My bet is a weasel but a coon or possum can easily reach in an opening that large and rip a bird to shreds.
