Well, we *DO* care, and we worry when someone has a problem or an emergency, but we aren't as qualified to help with every emergency as people might think. We don't want people to count on us for their chicken emergency answers, because in a lot of cases, a vet is much more qualified.

To the OP -- I hope you get the help you need for your chick. I know you must have been shocked and overwhelmed to see it hurt. So that *you* don't get hurt, please don't spread your family's phone number around the Internet. That could have dangerous consequences if it fell into the wrong hands.

Well sorry I was nervouse but a few nice members gave me their number and I got the solution thanks!

Not much help to the original poster, however I would think a few 'searches' would be in order first. It would answer the questions faster as I am sure someone else has had the same experiance.

As far as posting a phone number, they have these large books (sometimes yellow) that list real names, addressess, and phone numbers. I do not see how listing a phone number on this forum could lead to anything worse.

I agree Adna, some folks think that the internet is filled with "axe murderers" because of the way the media reports horror stories about stalkers, pedophiles and other assorted evil people online. People just don't consider that a simple trip to the grocery store can result in attracting up a stalker or worse, that their phone number and address is all over the place... heck, when you write a check you are giving out both PLUS your driver's license number AND where you bank, the things that you throw out in the trash often have all sorts of personal information on them unless you take time to shred them. I don't mean to say that giving out personal information indiscreetly is a good idea, just that we need to give just as much thought to precautions offline as online.

I think the point is this is listed under the "Don'ts" of the rules section.

8. Do not post overly personal information like your phone number, address, age (especially if you are a minor) or any other personal info you don't want the whole world to see.

It is absolutely against BYC rules to post personal information, such as a phone number.

Exactly! Panicking gets nobody anywhere.

Just as Nifty stated, clearly posting in the emergency section would work out wonderfully.

I actually do care. But that kind of panic and demanding, when this is a public board of interested hobbyists and not a veterinary service, nor something someone should rely on for immediate veterinary advice, nor expect anyone to "be here" to call or PM. Much less the wisdom of offering your number on a public forum.

I love the BYCers and moderators here. But I'm not going to treat them like paid employees, or veterinarians. People should understand everyone that is here, is here to share the joy, pass information if we can, and be supportive.

But we're not a staff, and this is NOT an entirely safe forum, no public forum is. And if there is a vet here, they have not declared themselves because most don't want to become the focus of the kinds of questions that then do come up in a public forum. And most vets don't diagnose over the phone or internet.

PMing moderators instead of waiting for a reply from whomever is actually on the boards at the time is just wrong. They're not employees or servants.

Sure you worry when a chick has a problem. Especially as ugly as an unabsorbed yolk is but there is an emergency section and it's still only answers by people who happen to be cruising the boards at the time and NO SUBSTITUTE for vet care if someone is truly concerned.

The mods are terrific but they're people cruising the boards, not obligated to be here 24/7 for demands.

I am always taken aback when they're treated like staff. I didn't think offering a phone number in a public forum at all wise. And if you have what you think is a serious and immediate livestock problem you CALL a vet.
