My Muscovy haven’t started laying yet, and Daphne hasn’t produced an egg since fall. No one has made a nest recently, preferring to just hunker down in the deep bedding to stay warm. The last two days have been unseasonably warm, and I was able to really clean and fluff up their bedding. This morning, there was a nest in a spot that no one had previously used to sleep. No egg in the nest and no feathers, but it is perfectly round and clearly someone spent a bit of time creating it.

Clearly, someone’s about to lay. I’m guessing it’s Daphne as she was a reliable layer before her reproductive illness in the fall.

However, this scares me. She almost died from her illness, and I was relieved when she stopped trying to lay over the winter. I know that restarting her “cycle” could be the end of her if her reproductive tract didn’t fully heal over the winter.

Anyways, instead of being excited by the nest, I’m nervous. Please send “healthy laying” vibes our way!

If all goes well for Daphne, I wonder if the ‘Scovies will be triggered into starting to lay.
