Someone please tell me having Roo's isn't the end of the world. *PICS*

Thank you all so much for all of your replies. I already am beginning to feel better about the whole situation. Personally, while the whole plan was for me to do all this for egg laying mainly; admitedly they are my pets. I love animals and have nothing against the cockerels. I'm just scared that I'm gonna upset my neighbors and/or the ratio of cockerels to pullets is going to be bad for my flock.

Again, you all are awesome here. I've been fretting all day about this. Talking to everyone I know (that will listen to me gripe about my chickens). And my eyes are starting to hurt from staring at this screen too much trying to read about the difference in the sexes.

PICTURES COMING VERY SOON! As soon as I either find the cable for my camera or go get a new media card reader.

BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE HERE AT BYC!

I am in the same boat. I had 4 girls and we were very happy in the city-until the hawk came. I lost 2 girls and decided to get some more. The new "girls" are about 9 weeks old and I think 3 of them are gonna need a sex change. Mom says boys gotta go.

I'm in the same boat, I ordered a dozen layer hens and a dozen meat birds and got 7 extras, and so far I've confirmed 5 roosters in the layer breeds. I actually have 3 polish roosters and a couple of buff cochins. Luckily, polish are supposed to be rather submissive to hens, from what I've read here. One of mine seems to have taken a liking to my partridge cochins but other than that they are just making noise at this point (3+ months). I believe polish and brahmas are both relative docile breeds. you can always see how it goes. The more time you can spend with them, the friendly they will be to you. Mine for the most part let me pick them up and pet them etc. Polish are supposed to get a lot of feathers over their eyes to which causes them to not be able to see that well. This might translate into less aggressive behavior although I'd like to get some insight from some of the other polish owners on this forum. Good luck!

Great pics.... but like the others said wait a little while longer.......... then you could always buy more females and have a larger flock and get to keep your roos, have a word with your neighbours, they might surprise you and actually like the sound of the early morning call........... and once again welcome to BYC (I did welcome you in the newbies section)..... now watch your addiciton to chickens really begin ..........

Just one? Both of the RIR's are supposed to be hens. Are they not? One of them is a lot more "friendly" (meaning it runs right up to me begging for treats) than the other, littler RIR.

I love my roos. They don't crow as much w/o hens in the yard, and they don't fight either. Maybe try keeping them and see how it goes?
