Someone selling "show chicks" on CL

That's funny, there was a very similar add here in the Kansas City area CL. I didn't think much of it at the time because it said they had just ordered a bunch of chicks and should have them soon to sell??? As soon as I read that I paid no more attention until I saw this post..

I really think this varies greatly. All the 4H kids here try to get birds from breeders, except for production (meat or eggs) pens.

Well, it makes sense to me.

New as I am to chicken shows and stuff, I think it is fair to say that you are selling chicks from "show quality stock" (if you are!)

Just as in dogs there are pups from "show" stock, pups from "performance" stock and pups from backyard stock.

Make sense? You can't tell about the individual chick, of course, but you can tell about the TYPE of parents it came from and then take the calculated chance that always comes from buying an animal for a purpose.

Now, selling on CL? THAT is a whole 'nother matter!

I just got in another shipment of show chicks from some breeders. In standards I have Blue cochins, Silver Polish, Mottled Javas, Golden and Silver Hamburgs, RIR rosecombs, Black Langshans, and silver penciled rocks. Bantams in Black Wyandotte, black Langshan, RIR, turkens, white polish. I also have some chicks that should be purebred but the breeds are unknown. These are good yet for summer fairs and fall shows.

Most serious show people don't Sell alot of chicks as the numbers always seem to reflect 1 out of 100 chicks are show quality. Thus being said. Alot of big time showers sell started pullets and cockerels around oct-dec in pairs and trio's Last springs Culls and on the average a Lot of your top breeders will report hatching anywhere from 1000-1500 chicks per season. Some people have small show flocks so every chick counts for there winners. But on average if a show breeder is a Serious showman chances are he/she isn't selling any chicks unless, they have fullfilled there hatch numbers for the show season or there are obvious defects they can see in the stock.

There are the occasional breeders who only buy Show Quality breeding stock and Sell chicks for the Profit. and theres breeders who buy hatchery stock and sell them as Show Quality.

This doesnt apply to every breeder Dont get me wrong i am just saying most the People I know who do serious showing are this way.

Well, I saw that ad and I called on it. I know the breeder he got the chicks from and he himself is a 4h judge. They seem legit and the prices reflect that. He doesn't guarantee anything other than they come from good show stock, but he says he's trying to bring more show quality into the area that is very much lacking in quality birds. I am actually going this weekend to check out his stock. According to him they certainly are not hatchery stock. I'm not trying to be difficult, just wanted to add my 2 cents for what its worth. I'll be sure to update with what I find.

When I read an ad that list lots of breeds, I think hatchery stock/shipment right from the start.
I hate it when people sell SQ chicks since theres no such thing, but they could come from SQ lines.
