Attach a string from your coop door to the trigger of your shotgun! Well.......maybe NOT.

LOVE IT...That would teach them.

I am SO sorry this happened! I keep telling hubby that this is happening and that we should get a lock to our door. He keeps saying "who's going to come all the way out here to steal our birds?" Never know! Some people have weird beliefs (sacrificing birds) and they would travel 20 min to get one. AND being way out here no one would see them either! I think I'm going to just do it. Hope you find your thief!​

Do you live in a rural area or suburban? Neighbors close or far away?


Here's an idea:

Park your car elsewhere so they think you are not home, move all the chickens inside(I've heard from other posts the bathtub works well), and wait and ambush them. Call 911 for backup.

Good luck with capturing them.

ANY LOCK is made to keep an honest person out. A crimial can open a ock faster without a key then you can with one. You camera idea will work to catch the person if they come back. Yup, Panner is going to say, DO NOT shoot or say you are going to shoot anyone. I am the first to say use the S S S rule, but not in this case. And pray that this person is not shot, for you have already told the police you would. Now if he comes up shot, you will be the first person they look for. It has happened that the wrong person has been arrested in siminlar cases. Still a little rock salt may not hurt.

I would NEVER shoot a human being over a chicken.
The laws here in Florida are A LOT different than California. I can shoot someone LEGALLY if I "feel" threatened. I DON'T have to run from a fight I can shoot. Florida loosened the gun laws about 4 years ago. And violent crime has dropped considerably in areas where the bad guys don't know who is and who isn't packing.

You have no idea how far this criminal will go. First it's chickens in the backyard, next time it could be in your house burglarizing or terrorizing your family. Some people have to learn the hard way. Aim for the knees..they won't run far and will still get to enjoy some jail time.

I'm with the person that says to put a string on the trigger of a shotgun!
I am often here at night alone and don't have a very good lock on my back door. I did however, put a sign on the back door window stating this fact... Open the door and have your kneecaps to neck blown off. I'll drag them in the house afterwards.
Anyone coming on my property during the night when I'm asleep or during the day when I am gone is obviously up to no good and the cops can't be everywhere all the time.
I will protect me and mine.

Thanks for all the great ideas. The video camera is set up outside my backroom window, I live in the suburbs. I've alerted the neighbors and filed a police report Please understand, though I'm upset about the disappearance of the chicken, I'm more worried because i have YOUNG children who live in the house..now I'm too scared to leave them in the front room or even their bedrooms because my room is on the other side of the house. It fills me with anxiety to think that someone has intruded my home and taken a live creature...what's next, my daughter? I don't think the chicken was stolen for food, probably to torture..i will not let ANYONE threaten my family further by coming back on my property.

I still need to purchase some "room alarms" and figure out a way to inconspicuously (sp?) mount them, and maybe some salt shot (as mentioned above, thank you!) just in case the thief doesn't leave or comply with my demands to wait for police (or worse, moves towards me aggressively).

Did I mention that the deadbolt on the backdoor is now busted? I can only assume that the thief also tried to enter the house..how can I feel safe letting my children watch TV in the den knowing that all that stands between them and a thief is a backdoor that has already been partially broken? Even after replacing the deadbolt/door, it's an eerie feeling just waiting for the perpetrator to return at his leisure.

Be careful if you shoot, sad but if you don't kill, they will sue you for everything you own. There was a man in Texas who shot an illegal immigrate on his property. Did not kill the guy so he sued and won the guys ranch. So you really need to think twice. In today's laws seems most are set up to protect the criminals not the other way around. If someone trespasses on your property and gets hurt they can sue you and may win depends on who is trying the case. We are way out and I had someone steal my BB red rooster out from his cage. He was show stock and as sweet as they come. Sad someone picked just him to steal but they were nice enough to close his pen back. Go figure... Sorry for your loss. Hope you can catch them without struggles....
