Someone Stole My Best Silkie Hen At a Show Today :(

That is just horrible!! I was just there yesterday admiring all the beautiful silkies!

I hope someone returns her safely! I think it is awfully odd that she was #1 and now is gone...that is one low life person.

I have been thinking about showing my birds, but am afraid of this!

I am so very sorry, I hope she gets returned soon!

My little girl and I are hoping to show our little hen and Rooster at our county fair this year.......never in a million years until reading this horrid story did it cross my mind I'd have to install security!

There are some horrible sick people out there.

It is easy, however, to start thinking that the world's a horrid place full of horrid people......but they're in the minority-look at all us lovely folk on here who love our chickens, offer help and advice to people who need it and are willing to put in lots of effort to help a fellow chicken lover get her hen back!

Really hope some good comes out of this.

Hey! This is Tracey! We talked last night on the phone. Again, I am SO sorry for your loss. I will keep my eyes peeled at the upcoming shows!!! I showed 13 silkies there and was so nervous, since it was my first time showing that this very thing would happen. This just confirms my fear and my DH said for sure we were getting little locks for the cages, which we wouldn't unlock until judging has started in our breed. It's ashame it has come to this. I won BB for the silkies and my husband and I were very nervous about leaving her and the other 12 over-night. Again, I am SO sorry!!!!

As I said last night, my heart aches for you!!! I am praying this person is found out or that it was just a mistake and your little girl is returned!!!

Have you ever thought about using a bungee cord through the cages and then hooked under the bench? You could probably crimp the ends of the cord and then lock the ends together under the bench. This way it would be pretty hard to get into the cages and you don't have to screw or nail them into the benches themselves.

That's just awful about the silkie though! I wonder if she will turn up at another show? Has that ever happened? A stolen bird showing up again?

A friend of mine had some polish stolen from him last year while he was packing his birds up. He left the van for just a minute and they were gone, crate and all!

I will have to try that with the bungee cord. It might actually work!

My friend that had her bird stolen in MN, we are pretty sure that the bird was being shown in the NE show I entered, hence why we saw the person we suspected of stealing and kept close eye on the birds. She was not there however, so we could do nothing about it and of course leg bands can be changed. We are working on other forms of identification, I believe she is microchipping a few valuable birds.

No luck finding her yet?

I don't know that we have had any purloiners of poultry at our fair, but last year someone tried to sneak some day-old piglets out of the 4H pig area under their jackets... they were caught before they got too far. Momma was very upset!

I hope you get her back!

I am soooo sorry for you..

It's terrible when something like that happens. I would be devastated if that happened to me. When I have to leave them overnite, I worry all night long if they are ok. They need to have more security at these shows. We have alot of time and money in our show Silkies and these poultry shows need to be more aware of security procedures. Only scum would steal someone elses birds!!. If I ever saw someone trying to steal my silkies, I would probably be taken to jail

...I feel for you and hope that you get her back.

Hello Urban Coyote, yes, a friend of mine had a bird stolen at a show and the perp entered it against my friend's birds (she was competing against her own bird!!!) And the stolen bird won! How sick is that?

I don't think it's such a bad idea, but there must be an easier way.

Do many people wing band their birds? All of my show birds have permanent bands on them. Not saying they can't be cut off, but they may go unnoticed by someone stealing them.

Then again, if the birds are stolen and never taken to a show again then it wouldn't really matter if they had microchips or not.

Maybe little chicken GPS units? Then the birds would probably be stolen for the GPS units!

fattie, that is awful!! She couldn't get her bird back in any way? I don't think anyone would dare show a stolen bird around here.
