Something broke a hole into the side of the coop last night!!

So sorry for your losses

When my husband built the coop, we decided to put chicken wire between the siding and the studs, all the way around the coop. I forgot to do that when I built the addition. I'm hoping that 5/8 siding on the outside, insulation, and 1/2" wafer board on the inside will be safe for them.

Unless there is something to stand on, there are only two predators that it could reach that high. A bear or a human. Both would have taken the whole chicken unless scared off. Since you didn't state where you live, my gress would be a bear. If that is the case, it WILL be back.

So sorry for your loss! And I hope it's not a bear! Be careful!I just installed(well, DH did!) a solar powered motion light on my coop. I haven't had any trouble yet and am hoping to not have any!

Wow, I'm sorry. I would do a stake out maybe tonite and see exactly what is going on. Whatever it is it knows there is "food" there and will be back. Be ready for it with a little surprise. Good luck and sorry again.

I'm so very sorry...what a nightmare for you and chickens.

I like this idea--but using hardware cloth instead. Maybe newbies fixin' to build a coop will take note and learn from your experience.

I don't know about this. I know that raccoons and other animals will climb a fence until they find a weak spot to push/tear through. I had a rabbit cage 4 ft off the ground and an opposum climbed, not wire even, but the posts, then climb the wire. There was a small hole at the top and it tore all the way through. It killed one of the two rabbits there before we heard the ruckus.

Sorry for your loss.
