Something in the barley

Anyone know what this is that came in the bag that I bought?

Its probably weed seeds that the combine harvested off weeds that were in the barley fields.

Yeah - the spiral things unravel if you pull on them. Seems like it came from a plant.

That's alot of material that should have been barley. Hopefully its safe for the chickens. Maybe someone can ID it.

I emailed the nutritionist at the mill so we'll see what they say.

These would be called ''dirty'' due to all the non-barley. I would return it for ''clean'' grain.

It turns out those are alfalfa seed pods.

The nutritionist says that since this organic, there will often be some other seeds in the mix.

I told him that's ALOT of extra material but I'll still use. A little alfalfa won't hurt the chickens. Adds variety.

I feed alfalfa hay to give them something to scratch in and eat. They love it! They leave the stems but nibble up all of the leaves.
