So how do I get rid of the rats then? P.s. the nearest rat poison is about 10 feet from the closest bird.
Rat traps in a box with a opening too small for the chickens. Adult chickens will actually eat rats if they catch them in the daytime. That is why I say not to use poison. The adult chickens will catch the rats before they die and it may make them sick. I have not seen a rat or a mouse around here since I have free ranging chickens. It is comical to see them chase one, until they catch it and tear it apart. Store your food with sealed barrels or buckets this will cut down on the amount of rodents. Light the coop with enough light they can see a rat of a night.
When I was a teenager we had a neighbor with a rat problem, we had a fun few nights getting rid of them. We put out rabbit food in one spot and when the dozens of rats came to eat we picked them off with pellet rifles. The rats were eating the man's corn sprouts off to the ground he was very happy to supply us with dinner and drinks to get rid of them.
