A lot of preditor animals right now will be hunting in Mating pairs.
some will have kits old enough to teach to hunt also.
not unusual to see them hunting in pairs or multiples at the same time.
if what ever it is is hunting with another you want to destroy said pair to keep the second one from coming back on its own later.

It rather sounds like it may be badgers, but I don't believe they pair up. They are very ornery creatures and can barely tolerate each others' presence long enough to mate. Which leads me to think possums. Very large possums. Get out your gun!!
