My hen hasn't been herself in two days. She just stands there and closes her eyes as if she's very uncomfortable. When I pick her up, yellow goo drips out of her beak and it smells rancid. She doesn't seem to have an overly large crop and it doesn't seem that she's got an egg-bound issue. She doesn't squawk or make any fuss with I pick her up. She does rock her neck side to side and has a weird gurgling sound that comes from her neck I think. I have no idea what is going on. We've never had any health issues. I've heard a bit about sour crop. Could that be it? Any suggestions on how to make her feel better?? I did see her drink water yesterday. But, Haven't seen her lay or eat in a day.

Well, I've approached it as sour crop. Her crop was full but not hard and the goo coming out only comes out if her head is tipped in any way down. The goo smells terribly rancid as well. So, I brought her inside and began to give her a dropper of warm water and olive oil mixed and massaged her crop. She had lots of gurgling and stuff began to come up. I turned her a bit head down and she started to throw up loads of seed and grass and goo, etc... You get the picture. I bet it was about 1/2 a cup of gunk. I think she was a bit shook up after that so I let her rest a couple hours. I have her in the big trough brooder next to all the chicks with her own water. She's been drinking so I decided to give her some yoghurt with chick starter mashed together. She seems more at peace and is actually sitting down for the first time in two days. So, she's either recovering or I've about killed her. I am not sure at this point.

When ever my hens leak anything out oeir mouths' the first thing i do is hold them upside down with one hand supporting and exserting pressure to the crop Normaly the hen will regugatate. This will accutly clear most crop problems. Like when you have a belly bug and you just have to thow up. They have a hard time thowing up on their own.
