Something I've always wanted to know...

Chickens have sensitive hearing - what is your normal voice probably hits them like a trumpet blast. I'vr read that they are able to hear creatures beneath the earth, like worms and grubs.

And for all our jokes, they are inquisitive and most likely reacting to the sound of your voice with at least acknowledgement....

"Hey, chickens. Wassup?"
Bwaack?
"How's it hangin'?"
"Bwaaaaack?"

we talk to our hens all the time...I sometimes have to threaten them when they slow down in laying...of course I am only kidding when I tell them "if there are no eggs by morning, its chicken soup for dinner" amazingly, there will be one or two eggs by morning! lol

So glad to hear I'm not as crazy as my hubby thinks!!!

Oh heck, I talk to my girls all the time. I talk to my goats, I talk to myself. I think that you chickens will have more trust and comfort if you talk to them as it will be a familar sound. (Hey I talk to the copier at work, she's always been good to me.) Nothing wrong as long as they don't talke back I say.

I think of the head twitches as chicken-nods.
And I do talk to mine. And I've said (aka crooned) their names to them enough that they look at me when I say their name.

I have recently begun singing to mine. I've discovered that the cats come running when I sing, as if I'm in distress

But the chickers do seem to like it.

And my millies aren't distracted when I hide the treat bucket behind my back. They walk behind me and try to knock it out of my hands. That standards haven't learned that and I've owned them longer. Maybe I spoil the milllies too much?

When I went to summer camp as a child it was on this organic farm and we had a daily chore of going into the chicken coop and collecting our own eggs for breakfast. I was told that it was dire that I talk to the rooster and let him know that I was not there to harm but simply collecting eggs or he'd attack me. You can be sure I was talking nonstop lol.

Talking to chickens. I love it. I don't talk to them in words but I imitate their noises. My son can even outcrow our rooster, flapping his arms and strutting like the real roo.

not discourage you.. break your neck maybe hahah. i know mine do that when i come out with the treat bucket.. well, all the veggies scraps and bread. lol. i think they try breaking my neck so they can get into the bucket quicker.

I talk to my girls in "people" and in "chicken". And I thank them every day for the wonderful eggs they give us.

I say "Goodnight" to them, very quietly, when I put them to bed.

And I don't care who knows it.
