Hi,
Remember a heat blub will heat objects within its realm of influence. An incandescent blub will just throw off heat and the heat will warm anything in its realm of influence but not objects directly. Put your hand under the light at the height of the chick. If you do not feel gentle warmth but a "too hot" feel, then switch the heat bulb for an incandescent. I use all incandescent ( not Teflon coated) 85 watt incandescent flood light.
