I noticed her bum nasty and got her in the house. I thought last night was vent gleet. So cleaned her again this morning and it is not a swollen vent, but is a thing sticking out of her, is round and attached, red and hard. Might it be a tumor?? There are no chicken vets here so basically on your own. She has went #2, but there is a lot of white on her feathers. I wish I had gotten better pics but trying to hold one angry hen and do it. It covers her vent except right at the top.

Can you get some clearer pictures, closer would be better also, but in focus. She may have prolapsed. How old is she, do you know when she last laid? Keep it moist for now, honey is good to use, cover it generously, it will help keep it from drying out and help reduce swelling. You can also use, plain neosporin ointment, or vaseline if that's all you have. Plain white sugar mixed in vaseline or coconut oil will also help reduce swelling.

It is a small red ball sticking out.I covered with honey. I cleaned it off the best I could but stuff stuck to it. I was afraid to try more aggressively. I couldnt get another picture of it. She has got to be at least 5 or 6 years old. I bought 4, something got one, one died from eggbound, a friend got the egg out but she died. Another found dead. I cant tell she is eating, will try some boiled egg.

Should I try to soak her again to help clean it? Epsom salts or leave that out? I don't know when she last laid. Someone lays eggs that are very soft, or sometimes has calcium deposits and is white instead of brown (tan). I thought was her.

You can soak her, if it seems to help. If you can insert a gloved, lubed finger into the vent 1-2" to feel for an egg, that would be good to find out if she's having trouble passing an egg. If you think it's a prolapse then keeping it moist is important, you don't want it to dry out. If the prolapse will push in, then continue to do that, and hold it in for a bit to see if it will stay. Sometimes it has to be done repeatedly. If she's having trouble passing an egg (normal or abnormal) then giving her a calcium citrate +D tablet once a day will help with contractions. Without better pictures, I'm guessing prolapse, but I really can't see it clearly enough to know for sure.

I believe it is prolapse. Ive been looking at other photos. When my neighbor gets home, I will ask if he can come up here and get a photo of it for me. She is soaking, and im going to try to get more feathers trimmed off and dose her up, will try to push it back in. I tried earlier and it popped right bck out.

Try holding it in for a while. Sometimes holding it in longer will help it stay. And you may have to do it many times before it will stay. Every one is different.

That thing is hard, sticks out, and I tried to very gently push back in but could not, she acted like it hurt and what did go back she pushed right out again.

I would give daily warm baths with Epsom salts added to the water. Some people cover the protrusion with sugar or honey so the sweetness draws fluid out and decreases the size of the prolapse. High protein diet and vitamins as well as minerals to help her heal. Good luck.

I soaked her in epsoms salt water this morning. she pooped in the water and some white stuff too. She did eat some boiled egg sometime during the night. I wonder if should treat her for vent gleet too. Can I give her Monistat cream by mouth as well as apply to vent? I wonder why this part sticking out is so hard. It is not like a regular prolapse which is soft tissue.
