To make saline for use in the eyes, you can add 1/2 tsp of table salt to 1 cup of water and boil it at a simmer. For a quart, use 2 tsp (9 grams) of salt. Here is step by step instructions:

I know the saline solution is really simple, but I have a bottle of Vetericyn Plus eye wash and am wondering if that would do the trick?

Just to clear up a small misconception. Typical saline eye solution does not contain enough salt to disinfect. By increasing the salt content in the water, to the point of saturation, it becomes strong enough to disinfect the eyes.

So, I should make my own solution and not use the Vetericyn?

Try the Vetericyn. If in a couple days there is not much improvement, try making your own solution.

I would use the Vetericyn if you have it. There are also commercial eye wash solutions for humans at most pharmacies and Walmart in the eye care section.

The human eye wash solutions mimic the normal saline content of tears. The salt (saline) content is NOT high enough to disinfect, while the method I provided for making your own salt wash solution will disinfect, and take care of pink eye.

Update: She’s doing just fine. Her eye is back to normal and nobody else appears to be affected.
