Sometimes she lays........

Hi, I am new to this! We have had 2 chooks for a few months now. One of them lays every day but the other does not. Sometimes I find what looks like a 'misscarried' egg (no rooster) and then she won't lay for a while. The other week I thought she was going to die. She was very lethargic and was falling asleep in my arms. She stayed in the nesting box most of the day. Next day she was fine but no eggs until recently. They both appear happy and healthy. Is this sort of egg laying/none laying common? Cheers

Welcome to BYC... every chook has a different personality.

Make certain that you have calcium for them.... and check the vent of the infrequent layer... sometimes they can be 'internal layers' and they die from that.

Thanks for that. Will try to check the vent......I gather it would be obvious if something was wrong? If there were layers, then how could she lay normally?
