Somewhere lost in Ohio.

Thanx for all the welcomes and the advise too.... I watch my Rottie (the one that got the chickens) and she wants to 'play' with them. I secured the fence more but the permanent pen isn't ready yet..... Oh and the advise on an electrical fence...... WILL DO! (Funny, I thought the Bully would have shown more interest that the Rott, surprised me.....)
My chicks seem to be a mix breed, Rhode Island Red/ New Hampshire Red and Golden Buff. The colors range from Dark Auburn to a "perfect marshmallow" real golden brown.....

Nice flock!! I hope your Rottie isn't a problem later on,but yeah dogs you have to watch. Friends Chihuahua s just took out her new chicks. Electric fence netting saved mine from our terrier, zapped on nose and now she scared to death of the girls. Toto would be ashamed of her.

I'll look into hooking up the electric line to a pack of Semi-truck Batteries ;) That'll learn her ! At least your terrier learned a valuable lesson.

Yes very lucky she learned they bite. she is a kill dog with any thing smaller than her,but I have seen her chase off a Rot. Crazy dog. What type of fence/net are you going to use??

What I'll get is TONS of chain link, some wine style crates for the nesting boxes (I found 8 for around $20 on Craig's list) and wooden packing crates with lids..... I heard the habitat for humanity resale outlets are packed with scrap from remodels........So I'll be going to Cinci to shop for what items I can use. I'm designing mine close to my dads...... (Pic)

His coop and nesting areas are open...... mines designed to be more closed so that in the winter here they are more protected from the elements. (You know Ohio weather ..... Heater in the morning ..... Air conditioner the rest of the day :/ ) Plus ours will more than likely be about 10 feet longer. That way we can split it in two, half for the ducks for their pond area (kiddie pool) and the other half large enough for a dust bath for the chicks. There will be chain link on the outside of the posts..... chicken wire (1 in hex, 20 gauge) running on the inside. Do need advise on what best top to use though..... (Will hunt for a thread). We found some solar panels that can be attached to the pond filter and electric fence line that will run along the perimeter of both the top and the bottom. And a converter box so that we can use a wind mill during the winter..... The coop is towards the back of a 1 acre lot..... I don't want to run electric out there if I can help it. So far I have a few solar spot lights, a heat lamp (for colder months) and a camera set up in the area where the coop will go. (Champaign ideas on a beer budget). Aside from the elaborately gorgeous coops I've seen on here.... is there a thread that shows more recycled material coops?
