Hey all! Been a stalker for a while, well actually since I first started with my pekin ducks and Rhode island chix in March and finally decided that this is the best place to be for a new crazy "fowl" lady like me. :rolleyes:
I never saw myself owning a farm animal, only dogs in the past but has this education in personalities been quite a treat! Still have dogs (sadly one of my dogs managed to squeeze her way into my temp coop and I am now short one duck and one chicken. Soon to follow one dog if she pulls that stunt again. )
I really wanted to say that this webpage is great! The members are so helpful and even the stories are great entertainment! Story's Guide to raising chickens was right! This place is packed full of valuable information......
I rambled on enough... I really just wanted to say hi and thanks for all the pointers everyone has given! :frow

I've way too big of a heart to ever hurt her... Or any of my pets. Since the mistake was mine, I can't really fault her. I became hurried when dusk set in putting up the temp home and missed securing a spot..... Lesson learned right? :idunno
 
Yes i learned a hard lesson as well. we built a new run and I didn't lock them in the mini coops the first night. I lost one to a coon pulling it through welded wire fence with 1"x2" spaces. I did get the coon after!!
 
Knock on wood the coon (or groundhog, haven't seen but a quick glimpse of it) skunk and oppossums stay away cause of the dogs. When I got out there to the coop this morning, there she was, trapped inside happy as a clam. Sheesh. Why only two and not all twelve is beyond me, but I am grateful the lesson wasn't more harsh. Go Bucks!
 
It may have been your fault that your dog got the birds BUT, it shows you she did it and will do it every time she has a chance. I would never trust her again. It's always the chickens that die,

I have never heard of a dog being pecked to death by the flock and then devoured.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your losses to the dog, good luck with the rest of your flock! There are several threads on BYC about training dogs to be around chickens, you might be able to find some tips to help you with yours, ie https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/829562/training-teaching-a-dog-about-chickens
If it is an issue of the dogs usually being loose and trying to get into the coop/run you might also consider electric fencing on/around the coop/run, it is usually really effective at keeping dogs (and some other predators) away.

Sorry about the dog attack. Unfortunately most dogs see chickens as dinner.
