hey guys,

We live in Ventura county Ca. I have a family of 4 with 2 boy's 11 and 14. I just bought a 4' X 8' enclosed run and a small attached coop. I just secured it in the yard and am now ready for 4 chickens. My wife wants friendly cuddly one's and I want mad egg layers. We will allow them to free range during the day but only have 6' fences around the property so can't have any fliers. Also neighbors may not approve so no roosters. Any suggestions on baby chick breeds?
 
I love my Silver Laced Wyandottes!! They are eye candy, lay well and not cuddly, but eat out of my hand. Your wife wants cuddly? Get her a couple of Silkies.
 
Silkies are not the best layer. Research what you want. The best bet for what you want is probably at a feed store. find one that will sell four. I live 600 miles north of you in Woodland ca and here the Tractor store sells at least six. A store in Dixon will sell you one if you want. Feed stores will be selling day old chicks in a month or so. They will cost something like three dollars each.

Black Australorps are good layers and very friendly. I have four and they let me pick them up. They are quiet too and have not gotten in trouble like the Hatchery RIR's and Barred Plymouth Rocks.

Check out the California the whole state thread. Someone there could find you some older chickens if you do not want to set up a brooder.

I am new here too. My family is about to start a small backyard flock (4-6) hens. Kids want at least 1 silkie, i want some easter eggers and some wyandottes. We are in western MA just near the border so it gets cold here. I have been doing lots of research and thats why we are limiting the number of silkies - I want some eggs! This place is fantastic by the way, tons of useful info.glad I found it

from Alabama. Glad you joined us. You might try checking out the Breeds section on here. Silkies are known for being very broody, so not the most reliable layers. We have Jersey Giants, Easter Eggers, and Marans (just got the first eggs from them a few weeks ago) and they've all been very good egg layers for us
